Neely Henry Lake played host to the Crappie USA Super Event this past Friday and Saturday, March 3 – 4, 2017. Over 60 anglers from several different states were competing for not only the $11,450.00 in cash and prizes, but a chance to advance to the prestigious Cabela’s Crappie USA Classic. This year’s classic will be held October 26 – 28, 2017on Kentucky & Barkley Lakes at Paris, Tennessee.
Pro Division Results
Our first Super event of 2017 started off very windy on Friday with murky water, one foot below pool and temperatures in the 50’s. The high winds didn’t stop Gilford Sipes of Moody, Alabama and Shannon Sipes of Odenville, Alabama from taking first place in the Pro Division with a total weight of 26.58 pounds and earning $3,000.00, plus an additional $450.00 for Big Fish of the 2-day tournament and the $500.00 Ranger Cup Bonus. The team fished the main river channel in front of Canoe Creek on stumps in 15 – 17 feet of water using live bait and triple ripple jigs to catch over 50 fish for the weekend. Team Sipes had Big Fish of the event, weighing in at 2.48 pounds.
Steve Brown of Elmore, Alabama and Gerald Overstreet of Gainestown, Alabama took second place with a total weight of 19.31 pounds and earned $2,000.00. The team fished mid to lower lake areas on the ledge of the river channel using tube jigs tipped with live bait to land 11 fish in 6 – 10 feet of water.
In third place were Henry and Jo Haley, both of Carmi, Illinois weighing in at 17.56 and earning $1,000.00. The team targeted man-made structure that they had found 14 years ago from Votten Springs south, vertical jigging, using both jigs and live bait to catch over 25 fish for the event.
Amateur Division Results
Saturday saw lowering wind speeds at 5mph and nice sunny skies shining down on Robert Talley of Riverside, Alabama and John Baker of Pell City, Alabama who took first place in the Amateur Division with a total weight of 19.40 pounds and earned $1,500.00. The team fished the docks in Sulphur Creek area targeting docks in 30 feet of water, catching their fish in 12 – 15 feet deep using homemade chartreuse jigs to land over 60 fish in two days.
In second place were Rodger Brown of Tallassee, Alabama and Roger Milbey of Salem, Alabama with a total weight of 18.86 pounds and earning $1,000.00. The team spider rigged in various creeks targeting 6 feet of water using live bait to catch over 100 fish for the weekend. The team stated that their best fish came from the Shoal Creek area.
Taking third place were Steve Buckley of Hokes Bluff, Alabama and Allen Payne of Lincoln, Alabama weighing in at 18.56 pounds and earning $500.00. The team fished the main river in front of Canoe Creek spider rigging, using live bait, in 13 – 14 feet of water to land a total of 21 fish for the tournament.
Joe Hayes and Phil Trapp, both of Cave Springs, Georgia took fourth place of the tournament with a total weight of 17.54 pounds and earned $190.00 for 2nd Place Big Fish of the day, $125.00 Ranger Cup Bonus and $250.00 Talon Bonus. The team fished the mouth of Canoe Creek in 15 – 17 feet of water using live bait to catch 30 fish for the two day Super event.
