Crappie Basics: Double Jig Rigs Can Increase Your Winter Catch

by Richard Simms

The spring months see crappie anglers flocking to their local lakes in droves. Of course, they catch fish.

What many of those anglers don’t realize is that could likely be catching as many, if not more crappie right now.

Sure, if you despise cold weather, we get it. But a livewell full of crappie goes on long way in warming things up.

Jason Sealock is a veteran angler, outdoor journalist, author, photographer, and fishing-industry consultant with more than two decades of experience teaching and inspiring anglers across North America.

Sealock says he never quits catching crappie on Tennessee’s Kentucky Lake. One lure he’s having great success with is the double jig rig with the new Trout Magnet drop jig at the top and the Tungsten Eye Hole at the bottom.

“This will be my main winter setup for panfish this season,” said Sealock. “That double jig rig is how I like to fish in the winter and now having a head made for two jigs coupled with a heavy tungsten jig to get it all down faster, will make fishing deep in the winter a lot better.”

Capt. Richard Simms is the former Editor of CrappieNOW magazine as well as owner of Scenic City Fishing Charters. He is also a former game warden for the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency before becoming a photographer and PR guy for TWRA. That lead to a 30-year career as a broadcast journalist and freelance outdoor writer. You can follow Capt. Simms on Facebook.
