A Field of Dreams Reimagined

In the eyes of a fisherman, Elmore County, Alabama is one of the South’s best-kept secrets. Near the confluence of several rivers—including the Alabama, Coosa, and Tallapoosa—the waters teem with fish, and the shores are equally alive with wildlife.
The magic of Jackson Lake Island adds a unique charm. This privately owned island, complete with its own herd of goats to greet visitors, is the perfect launch point for a crappie fishing adventure.
For outdoor enthusiasts who aren’t necessarily looking to wet a line but are interested in exploring Alabama’s unique ecosystems, the Alabama Nature Center is a fantastic resource. It offers field trips, seasonal camps, and self-guided trail systems for those who enjoy a peaceful stroll through nature.
The NaturePlex facility on the property ensures programming continues regardless of weather conditions. Visitors can explore the hands-on Discovery Hall, watch scheduled films, shop for souvenirs in The Bear Den Gift Shop, and hike five miles of scenic trails—all while learning about the fascinating natural history of the region.
A New Era: The Fields at 17 Springs
Today, Elmore County’s natural resources are no longer the only major attraction. A new “field of dreams” began to take shape in 2019 when community stakeholders came together to create The Fields at 17 Springs.
This state-of-the-art indoor/outdoor multi-purpose facility was masterfully designed to serve the needs of the local community and support the growing sports tourism market.
Phase I of the project opened in 2023, while Phase II debuted in February of this year. Phase III is currently in progress.
Gary Cobbs, CEO of the YMCA of Greater Montgomery, shared, “Lasting personal and social change can only come about when we all come together to invest in our kids, our health, and our neighbors.”
Thanks to the partnership between the City of Millbrook, the Board of Education, the Elmore County Commission, the Elmore County Economic Development Authority (ECEDA), and the YMCA, 17 Springs is a shining example of how collaboration, intentionality, and purpose can transform a community.
Phase I: Laying the Groundwork
Phase I included:
- 12 tennis courts
- 12 pickleball courts (4 convertible to futsal courts—a modified form of soccer)
- 4 multi-purpose turf fields
- 1 grass practice field
- 2 concessions buildings with restrooms
- 1 grilling station
- A small pond for YMCA programming
Phase II: The Fieldhouse and Beyond
Phase II introduced the Fieldhouse—an 86,000-square-foot indoor multi-purpose facility ideal for hosting everything from volleyball and basketball tournaments to local farmers’ markets and county science fairs. The indoor facility includes:
- A gymnasium with four courts
- A first-floor accessible private party room

- Restrooms and concessions
The Fieldhouse transitions into an outdoor stadium space featuring a multi-purpose turf field surrounded by an eight-lane track. Beyond the stadium, visitors will find six turf ball diamonds and a central concessions/restroom building.
In an interview introducing the new facility, project managers Richie Beyers and Stewart Peters emphasized its multi-functionality. While the amenities primarily serve Elmore County students and the broader sports tourism industry, the stadium was designed to host a wide range of events—including concerts, regional outdoor expos, and fishing tournament weigh-ins.
Strategically located just one mile off Interstate I-65 and directly off State Highway 14, 17 Springs is perfectly positioned to serve both residents and visitors from across the region and nation.
Phase III: The Marketplace
With Phases I and II complete, the core functionalities of 17 Springs are in place—but the convenience won’t stop there. Phase III includes The Marketplace, a development that will be designed to elevate the visitor experience to new heights.
With development expected to begin soon, the Marketplace will be directly in front of The Fields at 17 Springs on either side of Highway 14. This joint venture between the City of Millbrook and the Elmore County Commission, will offer one-stop shopping, dining, lodging, entertainment and even an orthopedic medical center.
A Weekend to Remember
Imagine a summer weekend where your family travels out of town for your daughter’s soccer tournament. With temperatures soaring into the 100s, the odor from hard-charging young athletes is thick while patience is wearing thin. It’s only Day 1 of a 2-day tournament, and your only realistic goals are food, fun, and sleep.
Now imagine all of that within easy walking distance of the soccer field.
Upon completion of Phase III, 17 Springs will deliver exactly that.
Richie Beyers is clear: “17 Springs may not be the biggest facility of its kind in the state.” However, he believes the elevated standards of the project, combined with its diverse functionality and proximity to Alabama’s outdoor amenities, make it a strong contender for hosting any type of sports or social event.
With such a wide range of options, the possibilities for training, competition, and recreation are endless.
