Casting with a jig under a fixed float is a good way to catch crappie during the winter. You can go longer but it’s best if you stick with a float length no longer than the pole you use. Casting is difficult with a fixed float and long line, but it’s a way to set the exact depth you need and work a jig as slowly as you want in the cold water.
Hooksets must be aggressive because with six feet of line under a float, the angle caused by the float puts the fisherman at a distinct disadvantage. Generate leverage by sweeping the rod overhead until you feel the fish. This tactic takes practice but can be an outstanding addition to your lineup of techniques.-TH
