The simplest way to rig a minnow is to put it on a plain minnow hook. It can be lip hooked, eye hooked or hooked under the dorsal fin. Sometimes you need more.
Color attracts crappie. Sometimes it helps and sometime it doesn’t. When it does, the most popular way to rig is tipping a jig with a minnow. The jig head gives you better control of the bait (compared to a minnow hook). It keeps the bait down and is much better when working in the brush. Tipping a tube or other small jig with a minnow is a great choice.
Another good option, especially when slow trolling double-hook rigs, is to tip a minnow hook with a jig body and minnow. Use a solid body like a Muddy Water, Bobby Garland or other soft, solid plastic. Place it on the minnow hook sliding it all the way up the shank until it just covers the eye of the hook. Then hook the minnow. This rigging gives a big hook gap making it probable you’ll get more hookups. -TH
