Kendall Frederick, otherwise known as KFRED, has developed fishing rods, reels and crappie jigs.
But the newest products in his merchandising arsenal are Cajun-style seasonings and fish fry batter.
Crappie Basics: KFRED Seasoning & Fish Batter
by Richard Simms, CrappieNOW Editor
Like so many entrepreneurs these days, Kendall Frederick’s business venture was born on YouTube.
“The first decent video on my channel was me tying a crappie jig,” said Frederick. “And from there it really took off. I started doing fishing videos and then trapping pigs, I did turtle videos, crawfishing in the basin, just a little bit of everything.”
One of those videos was a demonstration of his homemade concoction for fish seasoning and fish batter. The demand for more information on those products inspired Frederick to create his own line marketed under the name, KFRED.
The cooking products include seasoning, a seafood boil and fish fry batter.
“The batter is light and crispy,” he said. It doesn’t have the corn meal. It’s corn flour so it’s light and fluffy. I have a like an ounce of KFRED (seasoning) in the corn flour and I have a hint of lemon powder in there so it gives it a good flavor for fish or it’s really good on shrimp and oysters too. I’m excited about it.
“That’s the food products but I’ve also come out with my own line of rods called the KFRED Float Popper. It’s kind of built like a fly rod. I also have my own brand spinning reel that I’ve put on it. I’ve done a lot of videos with it and I’ve sold a few thousand already so that rods doing well for me.”
His fishing equipment and cooking supplies are a sideline gig right now. KFRED has a “real” job as well. That means between the real job and his business venture, he is a very busy man. But he hopes someday the KFRED brand might become his only job.
