Crappie Basics: Side Imaging Color, Pick Your Poison

Crappie Basics: Side Imaging Color, Pick Your Poison

Does the color of your screen make a difference in what you see on your side-imaging sonar?

According to Matt Xenos, expert crappie angler and WiredforCrappie YouTube creator – the answer is definitely, “Yes.” (See video to the right)

Pro Picks – Humminbird Color Palettes

Humminbird reached out to some of their pro anglers to see which color palettes they prefer and the results varied, but there were a few consistent favorites.

Chris Zaldain: Prefers pink for MEGA Side Imaging and yellow for MEGA Down Imaging, finding these palettes effective with yellow-tinted sunglasses and overcast skies.

Kevin VanDam: Uses the Humminbird Amber palette (HELIX #2) for MEGA side, down, and MEGA 360 Imaging, noting its compatibility with his Oakley Prizm shallow water sunglasses.

Keith Combs: Favors the standard Humminbird Amber palette (HELIX #2) for MEGA Side Imaging, citing its ability to reveal hard spots and shadows of suspended fish.

Carl Jocumsen: Prefers Humminbird Amber (SOLIX #2) and a darker amber/red palette (SOLIX #3) for MEGA Side Imaging, and green for MEGA Down Imaging, with yellow (SOLIX #11) for better bottom hardness definition

You can learn more about how to pick the best color palette for your Humminbird on this web page.
