Nestled in the heart of Mississippi, Ridgeland attracts travelers from across the country with its unique blend of hospitality, vibrant culture, and natural beauty. As one of the hidden gems of the Magnolia State, Ridgeland offers a relaxing escape for those seeking an authentic Southern experience – not just a great fishing trip.
Ross Barnett Reservoir, known as The Rez to locals, was constructed in the 1960’s after the impoundment of the Pearl River. Spanning more than 33,000 acres, The Rez is a vital water source for the region and a cherished recreational asset. Anglers frequently flock to its depths searching for largemouth bass, crappie, catfish, and bream, making it a premier fishing destination in the Southeast.
Visitors of Ridgeland also have access to various local businesses and activities surrounding The Rez. Kelly Durret, Director of Sales and Events for Explore Ridgeland, said, “We have a disc golf course [at Old Trace Park], lots of fishing, and walking trails. We also have three great water-front restaurants: Pelican Cove Grill, Cock of the Walk, and Crab’s Seafood Shack. So, lots of fun out here on the Barnett Reservoir!”
Also located on Ross Barnett is the Jackson Yacht Club. Founded before the construction of the reservoir, this club strives to support and encourage water sports, including swimming, sailing, power boating, and cruising, while providing good fellowship for members. For information, visit them online.
Just a short drive away, visitors will find the winding trails of the Natchez Trace Parkway which offer a journey through history and natural beauty. Stretching 444 miles through three states, this scenic roadway follows a centuries-old trail used by American Indians, traders, and settlers. Near milepost 105.6, travelers can experience stunning views overlooking Ross Barnett Reservoir and surrounding woodlands, making it a popular spot for picnics or hanging hammocks.
If you’re looking to take part in Ridgeland’s bustling city life, a good place to start is the Ridgeland Visitors Center located at Renaissance at Colony Park, one of the two outdoor shopping districts in Ridgeland. Here, visitors have access to a kiosk that allows them to view all of the events, shopping and dining options, and attractions in the area.
“One of those attractions is our miles of trails, including the Chisha Foka Multi-Use Trail,” said Katie Coats, Explore Ridgeland Director of Marketing and Public Relations. You may also hear about Rice Road Multi-Use Trail and Pavillion, a side trail off of the Chisha Folka. “We have the new Ridgeland Bikeshare Program. We have part of the fleet here at the Visitors Center, and the other part of the fleet downtown on Jackson Street.”
That location?
The Bike Crossing: Mississippi’s go-to outlet for cycling enthusiasts. From carrying a high-quality selection of bikes and bike accessories to hosting organized rides and activities, The Bike Crossing actively brings together cyclists from across the region.
“We have about 30 miles of multi-use trails here in Ridgeland,” said Mayor Gene McGee. “Each year on the first Saturday of May we sponsor the Natchez Trace Century Ride which is a great opportunity to come enjoy fellowship with a bunch of other cyclists. We usually have up to 1,000 cyclists that come from all across the South, and even some from the North. It’s a great experience, with many great rest stops and beautiful scenery as you ride around the Ridgeland Area.”
Less than one-half mile north of The Renaissance sits Township at Colony Park, Ridgeland’s second outdoor shopping district. Designed to bring a small-town feel to New Urbanism, The Township exudes an inviting and shopper-friendly atmosphere, whether you’re browsing one of the many retail stores or enjoying a drink and waterfront view on the patio of Anjou.
If you’re visiting during the summer, don’t let the heat prevent you from enjoying Ridgeland’s diverse shopping scene. Northpark Mall stands as a beacon of leisure and retail therapy within the Jackson Metropolitan area and boasts the distinction of being one of the largest indoor malls in the state. From fashion boutiques to electronics stores, Northpark caters to a vast range of tastes and preferences. Its vibrant atmosphere and extensive amenities make it a go-to destination for locals and tourists who are seeking both comfort and entertainment under one roof.
“Northpark has been part of the Ridgeland community for 40 years,” says Laura Antoon, Marketing Director of Northpark. “We have 120 stores; of that, over 20% are locally owned and operated. When you shop at this mall, you’re supporting Ridgeland’s community of small business owners and entrepreneurs.”
After a day of shopping, visitors can indulge in classic comforts at Dogmud Tavern. Named the Best Geek Hangout and Best Pub Quiz/Trivia Night by Best of Jackson 2022, this charming eatery engulfs guests with the sound of laughter and clinking glasses and serves a menu of mouthwatering dishes and specialty cocktails. At Dogmud, every night is game night making it a must-visit destination for food and board game enthusiasts alike.
At the center of culture and creativity stands the Bill Waller Craft Center. Located beneath the trees of the Natchez Trace Parkway, this facility not only houses numerous galleries but also serves as an information center and the site of craft classes and demonstrations. Betsy Ross, Executive Director of the Craftsmen’s Guild in Mississippi, explained:
“We are a 20,000-square-foot facility that houses the 278 Craftsmen that we have as members of the guild. In the gallery, we have for sale anything from our five different mediums of art.”
Glass, hand-crafted jewelry, wood-turned goods; you name it, the Bill Waller Craft Center has it!
