New State Records Set in Ohio & Minnesota

Axel Angelow, only 8-years old at the time, has set the new state record for black crappie. Minnesota Fish & Wildlife officials said Angelow, from Faribault, MN, caught this 18-inch, 3-pound and 13-ounce black crappie out of Cedar Lake in late October. The fish broke the previous certified weight state record by four ounces.
His Dad, Ryan Angelow, told his local newspaper that, “I filled the form out with my name, but I wanted him to have the record. This was a joint effort between us, but since he’s the one that actually reeled it in, he’s the record holder.”
OHIO RECORD WHITE CRAPPIE
Meanwhile, a 29-year Ohio state record for white crappie has been broken, according to a recent announcement by the Ohio Wildlife Division.
As their Facebook post said, however, the record was broken “by just a nose.” At 3.91 pounds, the new white crappie record weighed only 1/100th of an ounce more than the previous record.
It was caught by Teresa Croy of Ottawa, Ohio. Ms. Croy landed her catch in November 2024, from a pond in Putnam County, Ohio. The fish measured 18.5 inches long and was landed on 8-lb test monofilament line using a worm as bait.
The previous record white crappie of 3.90 pounds was caught from a private pond near Zanesville, Ohio by Kyle Rock in 1995.
Ohio’s record fish are determined on the basis of weight only and are certified by the Outdoor Writers of Ohio State Record Fish Committee with assistance from Ohio fishery biologists.
In some states, fish will only be certified as a new record if there is a minimum variance in weight. In Tennessee, for instance, the record application rules state, “A new state record will be recognized only if the weight of the fish exceeds 1 oz. or more than the weight of the previous state record for that species or recognized hybrid. However, ties will be acknowledged.”
Ohio’s record black crappie weighed 4.5 pounds. It was caught from a private lake by Ronald Stone in 1981.
