Closing Cast for a Crappie Legend
Every once in a while, you come across someone who doesn’t just enjoy the sport of fishing—they help shape it. For more than three decades, Tim Huffman has done exactly that for the world of crappie fishing. And with this issue of CrappieNOW, we tip our hats as Tim steps away from his role as senior writer to spend more time on the water and on the road with his wife, Jeanne.
Tim’s story starts the way many of ours do—simple, honest and a little bit wild. A cane pole, a steep bank and a hard-fighting bowfin that dragged a seven-year-old boy into knee-deep water. That moment could’ve gone a lot of ways, but for Tim, it set the hook for good. Fishing wasn’t just something he did. It became part of who he is.
Interestingly, writing wasn’t part of the original plan. Tim built a career in biomedical equipment repair, far removed from the outdoor world he loved. But like a lot of good things in life, his writing started almost by accident—stories shared for laughs about fishing and hunting trips with friends. Those friends encouraged him to send a few pieces off to magazines, and in 1987, his first article was published. The rest, as they say, is history.
And what a history it’s been.
Tim didn’t just write about crappie fishing. He elevated how it was taught, understood and shared. In the 1990s and 2000s, his Seasonal Structures column and feature articles in Crappie World magazine became must-read material for anglers wanting to stay one step ahead of the fish. His book “Winning Crappie Secrets” helped define the finer points of slow trolling and spider rigging for an entire generation. If you’ve ever carefully spread rods across the bow and inched along a contour, there’s a good chance Tim had something to do with it.
Over the years, his byline has appeared more than 2,000 times, alongside 140 magazine covers. He’s authored nine books, delivered seminars across the country and played a foundational role in multiple publications, including this one. As co-founder of CrappieNOW, Tim helped build a platform that continues to inform and inspire anglers everywhere.
Recognition followed, as it should. From the Bass Pro Shops Crappie Masters Lifetime Achievement Award to being enshrined in the Legends of the Outdoors Hall of Fame and National Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Fame, Tim’s contributions have not gone unnoticed. But if you know him, you know awards were never the point. Helping others catch more fish—that was always the mission. And he did it as well as anyone ever has.
Tim Huffman belongs in the conversation with the very best crappie-fishing writers of all time, not just for the volume of his work, but for its impact. He had a way of breaking things down so everyday anglers could understand them, apply them and succeed. That’s a rare gift.
As he turns the page to this next chapter, we’re grateful—not just for what he’s written, but for what he’s given to all of us who love chasing slabs.
From all of us—and from readers who have learned from you, followed you and fished a little better because of you—thank you, Tim.
Now go enjoy the bite. You’ve earned it.
