The February 2026 issue of CrappieNOW marks a milestone on several levels. It is my first issue serving as editor of this publication, and it also happens to be CrappieNOW’s 15th anniversary issue—Number 180. Both are humbling distinctions, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to be part of this important moment in the magazine’s history.
Before looking ahead, it’s important to pause and say thank you to a man who has helped shape CrappieNOW into what it is today. Richard Simms is retiring after nearly seven years at the editing helm, and anyone who has followed this publication during that time knows how much of his passion, knowledge and personality he poured into every issue. Richard’s January editorial said it well—he was part of a conduit fueled by outstanding outdoor journalists—but his steady hand, editorial judgment and deep love for crappie fishing set the tone.
Richard leaves big shoes to fill, and on behalf of our readers and contributors, I want to thank him for the outstanding job he has done. I’m also glad his byline won’t disappear entirely, as he joins the writing ranks alongside former editor Tim Huffman. I wish Richard nothing but the best as he steps back to spend more time with family, friends and the pursuits we all work so hard so we can enjoy.
As for me, I’m excited and energized by the chance to serve as CrappieNOW editor. Since January 2023, I’ve had the privilege of editing our sister publication, CatfishNOW, and taking on both roles feels like a natural extension of that work. While catfish and crappie anglers sometimes like to claim different corners of the fishing world, we’re all driven by the same things: time on the water, a desire to learn and a love for sharing the sport with others.
Over the years, I’ve been fortunate to hold a variety of editorial roles in outdoor media, including editing Arkansas Wildlife Magazine (20 years), working on national titles like Shooter’s Bible and Sports Afield, and serving as editor for many other print and digital publications. Those experiences have taught me that a strong magazine is built on two things: credible information and great people. CrappieNOW has both in abundance.
That brings me to what CrappieNOW is—and what it will continue to be. This publication is an unrivaled destination for passionate crappie anglers searching for timely tips and techniques, destination insights, product information and news from industry-leading professionals. We are more than a magazine. Through articles, columns, photos, videos and social media, CrappieNOW reaches more than 33 million crappie-related interactions each year, connecting anglers across the country and beyond.
It would be impossible to talk about CrappieNOW’s past, present or future without recognizing publisher and owner Dan “Crappie Dan” Dannenmueller. Dan has not only provided the financial backing that makes every issue of CrappieNOW possible, but he has also been a driving force behind its educational mission. With more than 40 years of successful crappie tournament experience, Dan generously shares his knowledge through seminars, presentations, writer and media camps, and appearances at major outdoor shows and retail outlets such as Bass Pro Shops, Walmart and Cabela’s. Readers who explore the CrappieNOW e-zine archives will also find a wealth of informative articles and educational YouTube videos led by Crappie Dan—content that reflects his passion for teaching and his commitment to growing the sport of crappie fishing.
Our mission remains unchanged: to serve crappie clubs, tournament anglers, and—most importantly—recreational anglers who simply love chasing slabs. You’ll continue to see advanced tactics from respected experts, destination features to help plan your next fishing trip, honest product reviews and practical how-to content you can put to use on your very next outing.
As CrappieNOW enters its 15th year, I’m honored to help guide it forward, building on the strong foundation laid by Richard Simms, Tim Huffman and Dan Dannenmueller. I look forward to working with our talented contributors, our creative team and—most of all—you, the readers.
Here’s to honoring the past, embracing the future and enjoying many more “crappie” days ahead.
