Veteran crappie guide Travis Bradshaw shows off a stringer full of slabs from Jordan Lake in North Carolina. In this month’s issue, Terry Madewell shares some of Bradshaw’s winter crappie-catching secrets.
It’s that time of year again—the season when the curse of being both a fisherman and a hunter hits me full force.
And a’hunting I have been! Including a trip of a lifetime – #1 on my Bucket List – to the target-rich wilds of Argentina. We spent part of our time dove hunting, watching flocks so immense they held more dove than many hunters see in a lifetime. Then came the Argentina duck hunts—where instead of a six-duck limit, hunters are each allowed 35 per day. With four of us in camp, we limited out every single day.
Barely back on U.S. soil, I was off again—this time to the wide-open prairies of South Dakota for another 10-day duck hunting adventure.
Meanwhile, all the whitetails roaming my Tennessee backyard have been left unbothered… until now. November means the rut is kicking into full swing.
Yet it pains me knowing I’m just five minutes from the boat ramp that leads to the Tennessee River—waters teeming with crappie that, except for a few diehards, are likely being ignored this time of year.
I know I’m not the only one caught between this rock and a hard place. Many of you probably feel the same tug between woods and water.
All I can say is—follow your heart. And more importantly, be thankful that we live in a place, and a time, blessed with such incredible outdoor opportunities.
When Thanksgiving Day arrives, I hope you’re surrounded by family and friends. And whether you’re crappie fishing, deer hunting, or watching football on TV—count your blessings.

Happy Thanksgiving!
