Someone gave me a calendar for my birthday and it has national holidays listed on it for every day on the calendar. Looking at just March there was a National Pig Day on March 1st, National Dentist’s Day on March 6th, National Biodiesel Day on March 18th and National Weed Appreciation Day on March 28th. Not sure what kind of weed they were talking about though. I could go on but since there were 365 of them with several on each day I won’t.
Most of the days are for something kind of silly but there were some I really liked. March 14th is National Napping Day and I like taking a good nap once in a while. Since I am a veteran, I liked March 4th. That is National Hug a Veteran Day. I also liked National Anthem Day on March 3rd and I think it certainly does deserve a special day. It commemorates the signing of the law in 1812 to make Francis Scott Key’s song our official national anthem. When I salute the flag as I sing this powerful song, I usually have a tear in my eye.
It hurts me to see people kneel when it is played. I might kneel in my boat as I lift a crappie out of the water. I kneel to honor a deer for giving its life to feed my family. I kneel for the cross. I stand for the flag.
I looked at all the national days on every single day of that calendar and you know what? I did not find a National Crappie Fisherman Day anywhere.
Since the hallowed crappie spawning run starts in most good crappie water in March, that would be the best place to put it. I think we crappie fishermen need to protest this discrimination. I don’t think we should riot and burn things down but we could march on Washington holding our crappie rods high. There needs to be a special day for us crappie fishermen in honor of all the hard sacrifices we make to provide our families with crappie fillets and keep them from overpopulating our lakes. We need to be recognized for what we do. If you agree, call your congressman. Crappie fishermen unite!
SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT
“Scholars have long known that fishing eventually turns men into philosophers. Unfortunately, it is almost impossible to buy decent tackle on a philosopher’s salary,” – Patrick F McManus
WARM WATER
If the water hasn’t warmed enough yet where you live to start catching crappie, remember that a lot of crappie lakes help provide cooling water for nearby power plants. Try for crappie in the warm water near the lakes discharge outlets.
COMMUNICATING WITH KIDS
A great way to improve communication with kids is through outdoor traditions like fishing, hunting, camping and hiking. Outdoor activities take you and them away from the distractions of everyday life and put kids in touch with nature. Ban social media from their smart phones but let them use them to take pictures and videos to share later. Make it a time of listening and talking.
