TAKE A VETERAN CRAPPIE FISHING
The month of November has two special days. Veterans Day and Thanksgiving Day. I personally feel the thanks we give on Thanksgiving Day should be something we do every day or every time we get a chance. That is especially important when it comes to our veterans.
We all have seen a young soldier in his uniform or maybe an older veteran wearing his World War II 0r Vietnam service cap. Do you take the time to thank them for their service? I hope so. It is the least you can do for what they still do or have done for us. They once risked, or are now risking life and limb to keep us all free and safe.
Returning service men and women have a 70 percent rate of divorce. At least 60 percent of Iraq and Afghanistan veterans deal with PTSD. There are many organizations across America that go above and beyond to help our veterans. Several take veterans, including those disabled, outdoors on fishing and hunting trips. It is a way of saying thanks as well as a way to help them with what they struggle with.
I am familiar with two of them, Charlie 22 Outdoors and Peterson Outdoor Ministries. Both are in the middle of America in Webb City, Missouri. Both work with veterans and include their families in their outdoor adventures. Both are Christian-based. Both work to thank veterans for their service and to help them heal the wounds many veterans have inside and outside.
It might shock you to know the Department of Veterans Affairs says over twenty veterans commit suicide every day. These organizations and others like across America are working to prevent that from happening.
Other veterans are disabled in some way and do not have the opportunity to get outdoors and reel in crappie or sit in a blind waiting for a deer. These and other organizations make that happen for them.
On Veterans Day, or any day go out of your way to do something to thank a veteran. Invite a veteran to go crappie fishing with you or go on a hunting trip. Volunteer or make a donation to a veteran’s group that is helping our men and women in uniform. You can go online to find organizations like the two I have mentioned that help our veterans through outdoor activities.
When you gather with your family on Thanksgiving, give special thanks to our veterans. As a family, pledge to support a veteran’s organization with a donation that will help our men and women veterans and their families. If not for them, you might not be enjoying your Thanksgiving Day.
Men and women that made sacrifices for us deserve our help and our thanks. Taking a veteran on a crappie fishing trip would be a blessing for them. Do not be surprised if you are blessed as well.
