Organic Food Shopping
The other day, I was grocery shopping with my wife. I was amazed at all the organic foods with their green and white labels. The prices were also amazing. They were not cheap. Some of those labels were in my wife’s grocery cart. I could have bought a lot of crappie lures for what they cost.
When we arrived home, I went to my office, got on the computer, and searched for organic foods. I found that organic meats are supposed to be free of antibiotics, growth hormones, or other drugs and are unnaturally enhanced. Animals that produce meat, eggs, and dairy products must have access to the outdoors for more room to move around and not be cramped together inhumanely in some crowded pen. They must also use organic feed.
Organic crops must be grown without synthetic pesticides, bioengineered genes (GMOs), petroleum-based fertilizers, and sewage sludge-based fertilizers. How food is grown can have an impact on your health.
In addition, organic farming is better for the environment. Organic farming practices reduce pollution, conserve water, reduce soil erosion, increase soil fertility, and use less energy. Farming without pesticides is better for wildlife and people living close to farms.
Organic meat and milk are richer in some nutrients. A study showed certain levels of nutrients, including omega-3 fatty acids, were up to 50 percent higher in organic meat than in conventionally raised meat.
Organic foods are worth the price of not having pesticides, petroleum products, or sewage in what you eat. I thought about that as I leaned back in my desk chair and pondered everything I had read.
On the walls of my office are deer heads, turkey fans, duck mounts, pheasant mounts, and fish mounts. Pictures of kids, grandkids, and me with fish and wild game are there too. They bring back great memories. They also get me thinking that I have been eating natural organic foods for years. Even before it became the thing to do.
I hit the search button on the computer again and typed in the health benefits of wild game and fish. They are all naturally organic. They are lower in fat, cholesterol, and calories than store-bought meat. They are also high in protein, iron, and vitamin B, yet low in saturated fat.
Fresh air, exercise, and other health benefits I get from harvesting all these natural organic foods. That is what I am going to tell my wife. I will also tell her that all the natural organic foods I bring home are cheaper than what she buys in the grocery store. I hope she does not realize the cost of all my fishing and hunting equipment. On second thought, maybe I better not say that.
I shut off the computer and go to my workshop to grab my crappie fishing gear. I open the back door and tell my wife I will be out shopping for organic food. She rolls her eyes, shakes her head, smiles, and tells me to have a good time shopping.
Feel free to use any of the above information with your wife. Maybe it will help you get away more to go organic food shopping.
