The Reel Deal: Hooked on September Crappie

by Lindsey Lucas

September has always been one of my favorite months for crappie fishing. The days are still warm, but the nights are often cool enough to make the fish more active.

One particular day stands out. I woke up early Saturday morning and headed with my dad to our favorite spot on the lake. We arrived as the rising sun cast a beautiful orange glow across the sky.

We started easing along the shoreline. I cast my line out, reeling it back in slowly. It wasn’t long before a “thump” and a familiar a tug on my line. Reeling it in, sure enough, I had caught the first crappie of the day. I was thrilled. We had only been fishing for a few minutes and we already had a fish in the livewell.

But the bite didn’t hold up so Dad and I decided to try a different spot on the lake, a cove where we normally catch a lot of crappie.

Again, came the familiar “thump.” I reeled slowly, trying not to spook other fish since crappie normally are in groups. As it got closer to the boat, I could see that it was a huge crappie. I carefully lifted it out of the water and held it up for a picture. It was the biggest crappie we caught all day.

We continued fishing all day long. Patience and perseverance are important for any kind of fishing. Our efforts were rewarded and the livewell slowly filled with more crappie.

With sun sinking to the horizon, we decided to call it a day. Dad and I were both exhausted, but happy. We didn’t catch our limit, but more than enough to have lots of fun.

As we packed up the gear and headed back to the boat ramp, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for this special September day. There’s something magical about being out on the water, surrounded by nature, catching fish, and spending time with my dad. It’s a feeling that is hard to describe, but it’s one I’ll never forget.

As Dad drove home, I couldn’t stop reliving each crappie we caught and the fun times we both had, already looking forward to the next trip.
