Video Tip: Matt Xenos on Trolling Cranks for Crappie

Lots of folks plan to have fun in the sun on the 4^th of July holiday. But most are recreational boaters, skiers, personal watercraft riders and cruisers. Sometimes hardcore anglers purposefully stay away from the water on holidays to avoid the pleasure boaters.

Besides, the hot weather often doesn’t bode well for fishing.

Matt Xenos doesn’t subscribe to that theory. This video was actually filmed last year on the 4^th of July on a popular East Tennessee reservoir.

Xenos prefers running his crankbaits in line with a heavy weight, trolling about 1.5 mph. He says the weight acts almost like a downrigger, allowing him to let out less line and turn more sharply to stay on good cover or schools of fish. He says that using 2 oz. in line weights, “I have found that a 2/3 method at 1.5 MPH is perfect. Meaning if you have 15 feet of line you are running about 10 ft deep.”
